BREXIT BONUS – From a local perspective. UK-US trade and the impacts to Wisconsin companies

We will be joined by two policy experts from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office at the British Consulate in Chicago. They will discuss UK-US free trade agreement and the work being done at the state level to build the UK-US trading relationship.


  Melissa Wooten, Senior Trade Policy Advisor, British Consulate

Melissa provides support for the development and implementation of a strategy to strengthened UK-US trade and investment relationship across 14 North Central US states. Melissa joined the Consulate in 2016 as the Vice Consul for Prosperity and Economic Policy, covering economic, energy, and climate policy in the Midwest. Previously, she managed communications for 1871, a nonprofit incubator for tech startups. She attended Northwestern University and University College London, where she studied social policy and economics.

Freya Macknight, First Secretary – Trade Policy, British Consulate

Freya works with states across the Midwest to deepen trade relations with the UK, looking to address market access barriers and increase investment relationships. Prior to joining the Consulate in late 2020, she worked on UK-Japan free trade agreement negotiations at the Department for International Trade in London, following almost two years as Senior Private Secretary to a minister in the Department for Exiting the European Union. She has also worked on negotiations with the European Union at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and has undertaken postings in the Ministry of Defense, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and the National Health Service. She attended the University of Nottingham, where she studied Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies.
